KATY, Texas (June 5, 2022) – More than 70 gymnasts will gather at Stars Gymnastics in Katy, Texas this weekend for the 2022 American Classic and Hopes Classic. Senior National Team member Ciena Alipio (Maplewood, Minn./Midwest Gymnastics Center) will headline a six-person senior field at the American Classic on Friday, July 8, while 19 other up-and-coming gymnasts will compete in the junior division. Nearly 50 athletes in the 11-12 and 13-14 age categories will be on the floor on Saturday July 9 as the Espoirs Classic concludes the two-day event.
American Classic is an opportunity for competing gymnasts to qualify for the 2022 USA Gymnastics Championships, taking place August 18-21 in Tampa, Florida. Athletes must achieve a minimum qualifying score of 50.50 for seniors or 49.50 for juniors. Team members and alternates from the 2020 Olympics and 2021 World Championships automatically qualify for the National Championship.
The Hopes Classic serves as a qualifier for the 2022 Hopes Championships taking place on July 28 in West Valley City, Utah. The top 18 gymnasts from each division who achieve the minimum qualifying score of 45.00 for athletes in the 13-14 age group and 42.50 for those in the 11-12 age group will advance.
All competition sessions will be broadcast live on FlipNow Powered by USA Gymnastics. American Classic kicks off Friday at 5:40 p.m. ET. Juniors and seniors will compete together in the same session. Saturday’s Espoirs Classic will be split into morning and afternoon sessions. Athletes in the 11-12 division will compete at 11:40 a.m. ET and gymnasts 13-14 will follow at 2:55 p.m. ET.
