Move over Planet Fitness, a new type of gym is coming to East Lake Park.
Earlier this week, the City of Birmingham began converting the dilapidated tennis courts at East Lake Park into an outdoor gym.
Birmingham Councilor Hunter Williams said the historic park’s newest fittings were due to be completed by the end of last year but were delayed due to supply chain issues.
“Construction has begun,” Williams told Bham Now. “They are physically breaking up the old tennis court material and then they are going to lay down a new layer of aggregate. The equipment is physically drilled into the new aggregate. It will be accessible at the ADA. Lots of people go to East Lake Park to walk around the lake on the trail. I think it will be used a lot in the park.
East Lake Park is a priority
Modernizing the park has been a priority for Williams, who represents the neighborhoods surrounding East Lake. During his first term, the football field was repaired and lights were installed. Now youth football is back.
“When there are beautiful public spaces that families and residents use, it creates a community vibe, an environment that directly impacts the neighborhood in a positive way,” Williams added.
If you’re curious what the outdoor gym will look like, it’s similar to the stations set up at the west end of Railroad Park, but in East Park’s case, “oversized.” There will be more different equipment and different types of stations, including multiple pieces of the same equipment so that many participants can use the “circuit” at the same time. The equipment is designed for individuals to use their body weight to strengthen areas like the upper body, legs, arms and more.
Complete early summer
The nearly $250,000 outdoor gym should be fully installed within the next two months, weather permitting.
