Bloomfield hosts ribbon cutting ceremony for new pickleball and tennis courts

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – On Monday Bloomfield hosted a dedication ceremony for the brand new pickleball and tennis courts located in Memorial Park. In total, there are now two full-size tennis courts, four pickleball courts and a practice wall in the park.

“At Bloomfield, we’ve made it a priority to expand our outdoor spaces and offer the best parks in the county to our residents,” said Mayor Venezia. “These new courts are a continuation of this commitment, because they are at the cutting edge of technology and are built to last for generations. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Michael Sceurman and all of his staff. I can’t wait for Bloomfield families to take advantage of this space and take advantage of all the recreational opportunities our city has to offer.

The courts are made of post-tensioned concrete which is stronger and more durable than traditional asphalt. This surface should have 20-30 years of use without cracking.

The tennis and pickleball courts were funded by community development block grants, with the contract totaling $ 411,955.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. When designing these courts, I really wanted it to be possible to play tennis and pickleball simultaneously, ”said Michael Sceurman, Bloomfield Parks Director, Recreation & Cultural Affairs. “Our tennis courts at Pulaski Park and Clarks Pond South are very busy. Now our residents also have the opportunity to play pickleball! With the durability of post-tensioned concrete construction, these courts will be there for current and future generations to play.

In order to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to use the courts, there is a one hour consecutive time limit. If no one is waiting to use the courts, you can use them for up to 90 minutes. Additionally, there are no skateboards, inline skates, scooters or bicycles allowed on the courts.
