IRVING PARK – The new $ 2.7 million athletic fields at Carl Schurz High School are now open.

The regulation-sized football field, softball field, water fountain and running track have been under construction since September 2018, and community members gathered on Sunday to celebrate.

“As we watch our students enjoy outdoor physical education classes, the student athletes hone their skills after school and the moms and dads kick the ball into the early evening, we are grateful to all of them. members of the Schurz community for their support and patience throughout this long process. , said the school on its Facebook page.

When the school does not use the fields and the track, they will be open to the public.

The high school at 3601 N. Milwaukee Ave. exists since 1910 and now has 1,676 students. Its athletic program includes track and field, cross country, soccer, baseball and softball.

The pitch is named after Schurz’s beloved trainer and teacher Frank Preo.

In 2015, Dan Kramer, then principal of the school, first offers the idea of a new field because it would pass through the Lane Tech High School athletic field on the way to work. The initial plans were criticized for not having community input.

The following year revised plans were presented to the public.
