Shortly after Congress announced the candidacy of Ishwarjot Cheema of Ludhiana South, cracks broke within the local Congress unity with Congress leader KK Bawa wanting to challenge the constituency polls , condemning the decision.
Ending the stalemate over Ludhiana South, Congress decided on Saturday to field Ishwarjot Cheema, a close confidant of minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
Shortly after the announcement, cracks broke within the local Congressional unity with Congress Leader KK Bawa, who wanted to challenge the constituency polls, condemning the decision. “The party has no value for sacrifice. I had continued to work for the party during the dark days of militancy, and had even been shot. Senior leaders are denied a ticket, while a close friend of the minister has been nominated as a candidate.
Training his guns on Punjab election official Harish Chaudhary, Bawa accused him of swapping assembly tickets. “The party disappointed me for the seventh time. At this point, it is really important to save the party from the black sheep,” Bawa said.
Who is Ishwarjot Cheema?
Ishwarjot Singh Cheema was the right arm of former Congress MP Gurcharan Singh Galib and followed Shiromani leader Akali Dal (SAD) in 2008. However, Ashu managed to persuade Cheema to return to the party fold.
He was also named president of the economic and political cell of the Congress. Cheema has been working in Ludhiana-Sud for a year and has even opened a party office. He was seen targeting MP Balwinder Bains and Lok Insaaf (LIP) party leader on civic development and other issues. After receiving the ticket, he thanked the party for trusting him.
