CORNING – City Council will discuss Tuesday evening whether the tennis courts at Estil C. Clark and Northside Parks should be rebuilt or redone.
In the 2021-2022 budget, the city spent $ 237,500 to replace the playground equipment in Edith Park, rebuild the tennis courts in Northside Park and rebuild or replace the tennis courts in Clark Park and renovate them. bathrooms in Woodson Park.
The resurfacing of the Northside courts would cost around $ 85,000, but they are in good shape. On the other hand, Clark courts are less worn and replacing them would cost a lot more.
The council has the option of making the courts usable as tennis and pickleball courts, but the budget is expected to increase between $ 120,000 and $ 200,000.
The resurfacing project includes the construction of a fenced-in playground where the Clark Park tennis courts are located, the purchase of new playground equipment and the creation of a four-square hopscotch. If this option is chosen, an allocation of $ 150,000 to $ 200,000 would be required from the budget.
To proceed with the application process, city staff need clarification as to whether the courts are to be converted to multi-purpose courts, only tennis courts or a court for tennis and a court designed for pickleball.
A few residents have requested pickleball courts and a single tennis court can be converted to four pickleball courts.

The council will review a one-year building consultancy contract with John Fleming, a part-time building inspector for Orland.
The city’s construction department consists of one employee, Dan Redding. The city has no one to replace Redding if he gets sick, needs time off, or goes on vacation.
The board approved a consultancy contract with Fleming in December 2020 and it is about to expire.
Flemming has expressed interest in renewing the contract with an increase of $ 2 per hour for an additional year.
