Due to an over-budget offer for Phase 3 of the Wald Park renovations, which included tennis courts, a dog park, trails and a maintenance facility, Vestavia Hills City Council is considering placing the tennis courts on what is currently a soccer field. land at the old Vestavia Hills Elementary Central campus.
The board first heard about the proposal at the November 8 board meeting and heard more details in a working session on November 15. The budget planned for phase 3 was $ 1.7 million, but the bid amounted to $ 3.8 million, which included eight lots, two toilets and a pavilion, as well as the other components of the project. . If the city decided to simply cut the tennis courts component, the cost would be around $ 2.3 million.
Under the proposal to build tennis courts in Central, the city could spend a total of $ 4.9 million, which is still over budget, but Boles said that in doing so, they would not only include all components of the project (except the maintenance facility, currently at Central), but instead of eight tennis courts, they could build 12, as well as a fully constructed tennis building, although the city council can modify the scope of the project if it wishes.
Central’s soccer fields are currently used for recreational play, but this may be moved to the new Dolly Ridge Elementary School field in Vestavia Hills, as well as the Pizitz Middle School grounds.
Mayor Ashley Curry pleaded for there to be at least tennis courts in Wald Park and called not having any in the park a “huge mistake”.
Vestavia Hills City Schools did not commit any funding for the project, but City Manager Jeff Downes said it was an option.
No decision was taken at the meeting.
Altadena Valley Park Update
The Altadena Valley Park Committee presented its recommendations to Council during the working session.
Committee members Tony Renta and Mitch Bevill recommended the construction of a canoe launching ramp and a disc golf course. The committee will also review existing drainage issues and use native grass to reduce some of the maintenance required for the park.
Adding 3.5 to 4 miles of hiking trails is also possible.
The committee is considering using different partners to help pay for part of it.
If and when the city decides to spend money or apply for grants, it will hold public meetings in the morning and evening so that the public can give their opinion on all projects.
Elections
City Clerk Rebecca Leavings said Jefferson County has officially moved a polling station from Horizon Church to Shades Mountain Baptist Church and is currently figuring out where to move voters who previously voted in Town Village, which will no longer be in use.
