Regarding the overall quality of athletic facilities around the Elk Grove Unified School District, the overall impression is that it is adequate. The vision has been that everything done in one school should be done in all schools in the district (we’re talking about high school campuses, generally).
But, over the past few years, the bar for what those facilities should contain has been raised, especially when you compare what we have in Elk Grovee to what you see in the larger public schools in the foothills and in private schools. here in the Bag -Section Joaquín. So, the question must be, does EGUSD follow “the Joneses” – the schools they compete against for league and sectional championships?
The District Facilities Manager is Susan Bell. She recently, upon request, emailed an overview of ongoing or planned work on EGUSD sports facilities. Here is what she reported:
Tennis Courts: The tennis courts at EGUSD have been in disrepair for some time, so they are in the process of being rebuilt or resurfacing. The courts at Florin High School have been completed and moved to another location on campus to make way for the Vocational Technical Education (Agriculture) facility. Courts at Elk Grove, Laguna Creek and Valley High Schools will be completely rebuilt due to severe cracking. Finally, the courts at Sheldon and Monterey Trail high schools will be redone.
Field Lighting: Due to AB 328 (https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB328) adjusting the start of the high school day to 8:30 a.m., we begin the process to add field lighting to training grounds at Franklin, Florin, Valley, Pleasant Grove and Laguna Creek High Schools. To achieve this, we are currently soliciting proposals from environmental consultants to carry out the environmental studies. In addition, geotechnical analysis and engineering drawings are being prepared for submission to the State Architect’s Division. The goal is to have the lighting installed in November, if possible.
Baseball Backstop: Finally, the EGHS JV baseball backstop will be replaced with one that will provide a larger “hood” on the field. (My note – the foul balls knocked out of that diamond, Machado Field, have cracked many windshields over the years.) In addition, there will also be improvements to the boardwalk along Elk Grove-Florin Rd . in the project context.
Weight room at Elk Grove HS
If you haven’t noticed there is a ton of construction going on at Elk Grove High School. But, one well-used room remains unchanged, P-60, the “portable” building that contains the school’s weight room. Next week we will discuss the school’s decision to move this facility into a permanent, larger building, comparable to what other EGUSD high schools have. We’ll also talk about the sports rappel clubs that dot the local landscape.
Larson back in town
Elk Grove NASCAR driver Kyle Larson will return to California later this year when he joins the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Larson, the track’s co-promoter, has committed to racing Sept. 7 as part of the Gold Cup Race of Champions, Sept. 7-10. Larson won the event in 2010 and 2011.
Flock basketball on milk cartons
Crystal Creamery announced last week that twelve Sac-Joaquin Division champion teams and the Elk Grove Thundering Herd state champion men’s basketball team are the latest teams to be honored on its commemorative milk cartons which are now available in The stores. Commemorative milk cartons have recognized more than 500 winning high school sectional teams and college athletes since the cartons were introduced in 2012.
Commemorative cards celebrating local soccer and basketball champions are now available at local grocery and convenience stores, including Target, O’Brien’s Market, Cost Less, Mar Val and Holiday Markets.
