Gloucester Playgrounds Redevelopment Consultation Closed

Plans are being finalized for a brand new sports facility in Gloucester, after a public consultation on the project ended last week.

In early 2017, Active Gloucestershire was commissioned by Gloucester City Council to bring together key interested parties and explore the need to develop the Blackbridge fields in Podsmead.

The project, which is now in its final planning stages, will see a range of sporting, physical and community activities offered by the development of indoor and outdoor facilities at the nearby Crypt School site.

When completed, the Blackbridge Community Sports Hub hopes to provide a floodlit artificial turf pitch and natural grass pitches for football, rugby and cricket, as well as a clubhouse which will include four team changing rooms, a dance studio /exercise, health and fitness gymnasium and social and meeting spaces.

The ground floor of the Sports Hub building seeks to offer a 30-station gym offering cardiovascular and resistance equipment as well as free weights and various indoor fitness classes.

Upstairs there will be a large studio offering dance, yoga, Pilates and martial arts classes, as well as flexible space to accommodate social and cultural events, classes, meetings and events of training.

The project would be made possible by the transfer of playgrounds by Gloucestershire County Council who in turn will develop around 30 homes with vehicle access from New Dawn View on the land indicated to the south-east of the site.

Those responsible for the project hope to submit an application for planning permission in September 2022. Gloucestershire County Council is also expected to submit a separate application for the housing development around the same time.

Once planning permission has been approved, work could begin in summer 2023, followed by a grand opening in spring 2024.
