There’s no denying the impressive skills of Bears quarterback Justin Fields. That’s why the team traded to acquire him in the 2021 NFL Draft, and also why it’s hoped he’ll become a franchise quarterback.
But it was his offensive ownership that stood out against offensive coordinator Luke Getsy in the first week of training camp.
“That’s what’s so special about him,” Getsy said. “Forget the athletic part. This guy, the way he attacks every day and his approach and example, doesn’t ask anyone to do anything he doesn’t expect of himself. This guy is a natural born type of leader, so we’re lucky to have a guy like him leading this thing.
It’s something that’s been evident to wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who described Fields as “more vocal and just figuring out he’s the guy and this is his team.”
Mooney pointed out that the guys turned to Fields.
“We were just outside after practice, and you have guys seeing him walking,” Mooney said. “You can’t just leave the field. You’re like, ‘I need to get more reps with him.’
When the Bears weren’t at Halas Hall this offseason, Fields was hosting practice sessions in Atlanta with teammates, including Mooney and tight end Cole Kmet, to help get on the same page before the game. season.
“I think it’s a big deal,” Kmet said. “It’s the throw that we end up on every time we’re in these practices, the routes versus the aerial type stuff. It was really cool to hit that in a practice setting. Obviously, we will want to progress and continue on this path.
Although the attack is not there yet, they have made progress since the spring. Fields played a big part in that, and it’s something to watch ahead of the 2022 season.
