Athletic fields

Lights must be on at sports fields on July 2, July 3 and July 4

Seattle Parks and Recreation will turn on pitch lighting at ball diamonds everywhere the town on the evening of Saturday July 2; Sunday July 3 and Monday July 4 to protect surfaces. Ball diamond lights will be on around 8:30 p.m. and most will be off by 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., depending on the field.

Lights will be turned on to discourage the use of fireworks. Fireworks are illegal in the City of Seattle and will destroy artificial turf on surrounding grounds or facilities. The approximate replacement cost of synthetic turf based on an average full-size field (110,000 square feet) is $1.2 million. All fields have been renovated in recent years and benefit users of the field including soccer, football, baseball, Ultimate Frisbee and lacrosse players.

The fields will be supervised from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
