A model rocket accidentally led to a massive fire which severely damaged several sports fields in a park in Topsfield, Massachusetts, firefighters confirmed via NBCBoston.
The blaze occurred at Pye Brook Park on Wednesday August 3 amid an ongoing severe drought in the area, according to the Topsfield Fire Chief. Jen Collins Brown.
Firefighters responded to the scene but ran out when the fire spread rapidly and created extreme heat, leading the department to request assistance from area firefighters in Middleton, Hamilton and Wenham.
Brown confirmed no one was injured in relation to the blaze, which was brought under control less than an hour after firefighters responded and died down before it could spread to other buildings, dugouts and the woods adjacent to the baseball diamonds.
“It was just a family hanging out and they made a mistake,” Brown said via NBCBoston. “I think the take-home message is that it’s so dry — windy, hot and dry — the perfect storm, perfect for a fire.”
Several baseball fields remained charred and black, forcing several games to be postponed.
“It was crazy to see,” said Bill King, whose team had played on the ground a few days before the fire and were scheduled to play another game afterwards. He said the grass was “dead” the last time the team played on it, “but it was by no means black.”
Parts of Massachusetts are currently facing severe drought, according to the National Integrated Drought Information System. website.
