As part of efforts to empower women and improve their livelihoods, the National Center for Women’s Development (NCWD), in collaboration with the Partnership for the Advancement of Women in Economic Development (PAWED), trains 115 women and girls with craft skills.
Skills include Plaster of Paris (POP), Tiling and Masonry, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Generator Repair, Plumbing and Piping, Electrical Works and Installation.
NCWD Chief Executive Dr Asabe Bashir who spoke at the opening ceremony of the 7th edition of the training program in Abuja yesterday said the idea is to empower young women to act as skilled workers who will have a competitive advantage over their men. counterparts.
She noted that society is gradually becoming more sensitive to the fact that more women are needed in the workplace, as more women take on more financial responsibilities for their families.
“Today we have entered a new phase of the project where 115 selected craftswomen are expected to participate in the advanced level of training, leading to the awarding of the Craft Test 3 Certificate. I therefore urge all 115 young women and girls who were selected to do their best to justify the trust in you response,” she said.
On her part, Program Manager, Development Research and Projects Center (dRPC), Aisha Hashim, said that the dRPC-PAWED program aims to empower Nigerian women, saying, “We have realized that Nigerian women constitute 49% of the population. country’s population, but only has access to 5% of the funding.
“The PAWED program works with partners and centers like NCWD to ensure that women are empowered because it is impossible for 41% of the population to be vulnerable. If Nigeria is to develop, 49% of the population must be empowered.
“Under PAWED, our goal is to lift Nigerian women out of their current vulnerable position of strength and ability, as it is impossible for a population of 41% to be allowed access to only 5% to the country fund. We hope to continue to partner with the center for the betterment of Nigerian women,” she added.
