Penrose Physiotherapy brought coach Don Craig back to the tennis courts to help student-athletes

PThe staff at enrose Physical Therapy & Associates treat muscle strains, tendon problems and other common tennis-related injuries. But sometimes they can also have a patient who has suffered a serious tennis contact injury, and that’s what brought Olympia High School women’s tennis head coach Don Craig to the clinic there. a few years ago.

“I injured myself in the fourth degree while playing tennis,” says Craig. “It happens when your partner bumps into you and then you hit a concrete wall.”

Craig says he remembers the pain being so intense he thought there must be blood all over the floor, but the damage turned out to be entirely internal. After orthopedic shoulder surgery, he became a patient of Penrose Physical Therapy to continue his recovery. At that time, he was working directly with Dr. Jennifer Penrose, physical therapist and clinic owner, who is also certified in orthopedics. “She did a wonderful job,” he said.

Craig says the staff helped him physically recover not only from that injury, but also from subsequent knee surgery and a subsequent compression fracture in his back. He says that in all of these treatments the staff also helped him with the mental part of his recovery, particularly when he initially feared he was not getting better. “I still remember the basics of a session,” he says. “They helped me mentally out of it.”

“They had a connection with me, with the patient,” Craig adds, describing the support he received from Penrose Physical Therapy, including Kylie Starr. Starr is a team physical therapist who also enjoys working with athletes and providing therapies for post-surgical conditions. “She talked me through it. She supported me through the mental stuff,” he says.

Craig describes that in one instance, Penrose staff worked with him to target drills that would allow him to attend two significant events, including a family trip to Hawaii. He says walking the road to recovery himself and seeing what physiotherapy can do is information he can use to coach athletes who want to return to tennis after injuries or surgeries.

He says the wonderful staff and their good work is why he is a fan of Penrose Physical Therapy. “They are very welcoming and at the same time they get down to business,” he says. “It starts with the receptionist, and they’re all absolutely wonderful.”
