Texans help renovate Yates sports grounds

The Texans are one of three organizations contributing $ 450,000 to rebuild the athletic fields at Yates High School.

The Texans, the NFL Foundation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation donate in a ceremony Friday at the school.

In addition to the donation, the Texans are also providing the artificial surface they played on last season at NRG Stadium to help resurface the fields used for all of the school’s sports. The Texans install a new artificial surface each season and donate the previous one to a local high school.

“The Houston Texans are proud to work with our partners to support the renovation of the Jack Yates High School athletic field,” President and CEO Cal McNair said in a statement. “Our hope is that this field will enrich the love of sport among the youth of the Historic Third Quarter, inspiring the next generation of student athletes and leaders. We are grateful to be a part of this project and believe it will become a full-fledged pillar of the community for decades to come.

John McClain, a Waco native who graduated from Baylor in 1975, covered the NFL, including the Oilers and Texans, for more than four decades in the Houston Chronicle. He worked for the Waco Tribune Herald from 1973 to 1976, when he accepted a position with The Chronicle. to cover the World Hockey Association’s original Houston Eros.

McClain has a plaque in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio as the 2006 recipient of the Dick McCann Memorial Award (now the Bill Nunn Memorial Award) presented annually by the Pro Football Writers of America to a writer for his long and distinguished coverage of the NFL. He is the former president of the Pro Football Writers of America. In 2019, he was elected into the Second Class of Media Inductees of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Baylor Line Foundation.

He is a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the Professional Football Hall of Fame Senior Committee and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

In 2015, he was named Gridiron Legend in Texas, becoming the third member of the media behind Dave Campbell and Mickey Herskowitz. In 2019, he was voted into the Second Class of Media Laureates of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

McClain can be heard six times a week on Texans Sports Radio 610 flagship station in Houston. He also appears on numerous sports talk shows across the country.

McClain has also appeared in eight films: The Rookie, The Longest Yard, Spring Breakers, Secretariat, Invincible, Cook County, The Game Plan and Make It Rain.
