STAPLES — Staples-Motley secured the top seed in the upcoming Section 8A women’s tennis tournament with a 5-2 Mid-State Conference victory over Park Rapids on Tuesday, October 4.
The Cardinals swept all four singles games in straight sets to close out the conference schedule.
Macy Goochey and Mickey Clark picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 1 seed Amy Rollins and Kenzie Erickson while Emmy Goochey and Abby Runyan picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Corinne Olson and Maddison Perius. at No. 2 double for the Panthers’ two wins.
Lauren Rutten, who was ranked No. 6 as an individual player in the state’s latest Class A poll, led the Staples-Motley singles players, who lost just eight games.
Staples-Motley, which was ranked No. 8 in the state’s latest Class A poll, improved to 4-1 against conference opponents and 14-4 overall as the Panthers closed out the Mid-State schedule with a 1-4 record while falling to 4-3 against sectional opponents and 7-12 overall in doubleheaders.

The Panthers separate in duels at Crookston
CROOKSTON – The Panthers shared a triangular encounter against two section rivals in Crookston on Saturday, October 1. Park Rapids rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Crookston with a 6-1 win over Roseau. Crookston shut out Roseau 7-0 in the other game.
Against Crookston, Morgan Koppelman posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Brekken Tull in singles No. 1 while Ella Ehler prevailed with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 victory over Isabelle Smith in singles n°3.
The Pirates, who beat Park Rapids by a 5-2 margin earlier this season, won the other five games in straight sets. Crookston, who was ranked No. 9 in the state’s latest Class A poll, finished the regular season with a 14-3-1 record.
Six straight set wins led the Panthers past Roseau.
In singles, Koppelman defeated Erin Brandt 6-2, 6-1 for first place; Ehler beat Jessie Danielson 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 position; and Nora Bolton picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 3 ranked Ava Holmgren in singles.
Park Rapids swept doubles with Clark and Shailyn Hayes beating Marissa Glodowski and Kylie Winkler 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1; Macy Goochey and Emmy Goochey posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lindsey Vistad and Bryn Wilson at No. 2; and Kate Dravis and Runyan picking up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Dakota Dunham and Quinn Kruger at No. 3.

ROSEAU – The Panthers also shared two games in a triangle meeting in Roseau on Sept. 29.
Park Rapids followed up a 5-2 loss to East Grand Forks with a 6-1 win over Roseau. East Grand Forks beat Roseau 5-2 in the other game.
Bolton’s 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Bryn Hanson at No. 3 in the singles and a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory by Clark and Macy Goochey over Maddie Petrovich and Lila Rothenberger at No. 1 double led the Panthers against East Grand Forks. The green wave won the other five matches in straight sets.
Park Rapids swept the singles matches in the win over Roseau. Koppelman beat Emma Johnson 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 singles; Hayes shut out Winkler 6-0, 6-0 for second in singles; Ehler shut out Ava Hass 6-0, 6-0 for third in singles; and Dravis beat Kruger 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 singles to spark another 6-1 victory over the Rams.
Macy Goochey and Clark survived a 6-0, 3-6, 12-10 victory over Danielson and Brandt at the No. 1 doubles while Runyan and Emmy Goochey beat Glodowski and Karli Wensloff 6-4, 6- 4 to double No. 2 to cap the victory.
